Cut Yourself Some Slack

There’s a piece of advice that I’d like to share with my fellow dentists.

I come back to it every now and then because it keeps me grounded and focused on what’s important.

That advice is this:

Perfection Isn’t Possible.

It’s amazing how powerful this phrase can be.

Whether it’s dentistry, the business of your dental practice, or even your personal life — You don’t ever have to be perfect!

Yes, dentistry has a high bar for expectations.

You’re expected to provide excellent service at all times.

You’re expected to execute your work flawlessly during every appointment.

You’re expected to have a solution for every problem.

But dealing with the humans in our dental practices, those expectations are sometimes a little unrealistic.

Over the years, I’ve come up with a few ways of thinking about this:

1. There will always be another opportunity.

If you feel like there’s no point doing something because you were too late or too slow then remember, there’s always another opportunity around the corner!

It’s easy to see other people’s success and think, why didn’t I think of that?

But there will always be another chance, you just need to be alert and patient.

2. Plan A didn’t work? Learn from it and quickly move to plan B.

The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. But that doesn’t mean you should give up. Nor is there any rule that says you have to keep doing something that doesn’t work. That’s a lot like banging your head against the wall!

Some of the most successful businesses are the product of trial and error. As Henry Ford said, “the only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”

3. Take confidence from what you have accomplished.

To get this far you must have done a lot of things right.

While this business of dentistry will never be free of challenges, it pays to reflect on your win streak once in a while so you know how far you’ve come.

As dentists it’s been a tough two years, so staying positive is essential!

Forward this to a friend or colleague if you think they need to hear this too!

Now that we know perfection isn’t possible, let’s talk about something that 100% is.
